Balthazar - Applause
They refer to themselves as an alternative pop band, but that’s a little too vague for anyone to correctly categorize, or at least imagine, what Balthazar might sound like apart from listening to this album. Forming in the latter part of 2004, this Belgian quintet have made a little career of releasing small bits of their musical product, garnering small-town nominations for their excellence, and putting emphasis on their touring lives rather than a proper first full-length. Balthazar's relatively small number of fans seems tense and anxious for a little more to grasp their minds around and associate the band with. Well, here you are, guys: Applause ensues and that small number of followers is about to get bigger.

Northern California’s Whirr could be the first band to qualify. Its 2012 album Pipe Dreams opens with “Reverse,” where a prerequisite guitar delay undulates through blankets of reverb as ethereal female vocals coo at a barely audible volume. But then the song bursts open with melodic guitar riffs, setting the stage for a memorable listening experience. “Junebouvier” is so catchy that it nearly sounds like power pop disguised as dream-pop. And anyone who appreciated the punk approach to the faster tunes on MBV’s Isn’t Anything will feel at home with “Bogus.” The slower “Flashback” boasts impressive guitar effects, but the band doesn't let such bells and whistles take center stage when there’s a beautifully sung melody to embrace.

Ummagma – Antigravity (2012)
GREAT ALBUM 5 STARS
Ummagma (UA/CAN) is a Canadian-Ukrainian duo that consists of Alexx Kretov and Shauna McLarnon. The debut album “Antigravity” is a mixed-emotion experience of beautiful melancholy and uplifting euphoria all found in one album, virtually taking the listener on a journey via the band’s musical interludes. This album will appeal to fans of modern bands like Blonde Redhead and Asobi Seksu, as well as older 80s bands of the 4AD epoch (especially Cocteau Twins) and Talk Talk, with a little Sputniks Down, Robert Fripp, Brian Eno and Slowdive wedged in there too. Ummagma has essentially achieved an incredible feat of bringing together some otherwise seemingly non-combinable musical genres (post-rock/dreampop/folk rock/progressive rock/shoegaze) all within on album and they have done so rather handsomely. This album lends a sense of intrigue about what’s to come next from this dynamic duo.

Paul Dixon (born in London, 8 August 1989) is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. He was known in the years 2010–2012 as David's Lyre, but is now using the musical project name fyfe.
He picked the name David's Lyre during his university studies in Manchester, in reference to the musical skills of the biblical King David with the lyre. As well as playing acoustic and electric guitar, Dixon plays the WEM CopyCat, Autoharp, Marxophone and Omnichord.
He was featured by The Guardian as 'New band of the day' in 2010, by which time he had received attention for cover versions (of Ellie Goulding among others), remixes of other artists – notably, Marina and the Diamonds and Everything Everything – and had himself been remixed by producers The Last Skeptik and JaKwob.
His debut EP release in 2011, In Arms, was described as "promising" by BBC reviewer Mike Diver, and drew comparisons with Patrick Wolf for its blend of folk and electronic instruments. A music video was released for "In Arms", using a short film animation which fitted the song.

MICROFILM is a french band created in 2003 by musicians coming from various musical backgrounds and bands such as Gum, Seven Hate and Myra Lee. The result of their meeting is an instrumental music including audio and video samples and is often described as Post Rock in the vein of Mogwai, Explosions in the sky, From monuments to masses…
The project takes its true dimension in concert through the projection of pictures sampled from movies and then graphically re-animated.To avoid looking like any simple movie concert and to keep spotlight on the musicians’s play, the images are piloted directly by the musicians to the rythm of the songs thanks to pedals specially designed by them. The music style is quite original since they only listen to their feelings and music is their way to express their emotions.
Concerning their musical tastes, it’s pretty wide,from deeply independent rockbands to highly commercial Mtv productions such as Sonic Youth, Jawbox, The Neptunes, My Bloody Valentine, Queens Of The Stone Age,Foxy Brown, Bernard Hermann, Two lone swordsmen, Black Sabbath, Envy… The first album of MICROFILM “A journey to the 75th” was released on cd in January 05 (Rejuvenation records/JR prod) and then re-released on LP in January 06 (Migouri records).
It was acclaimed by the french independent press,fanzines and websites…it even appeared in the american website The Silent Ballet’s Top 50 of instrumental releases (2006)! “Stereodrama” the title of their latest album, is the band’s most complete production since it was conceived as a whole.Comfortably sitting in his chair with a pair of 3D glasses included in the album, the listener can plunge himself completely in the plastic and musical relief of the compositions.
This album was released in France by La Baleine distrib and gave the band the opportunity to play more and in bigger venues all around France (Paris, Lyon, Nantes, Bordeaux, Rennes…)but also through Europe and even in China for a 8-show-tour in summer 2007! And the musicians of MICROFILM were rather glad to play with bands such as Explosions in the sky, M83, Jeffrey Lewis, Mono, Millionaire, The Black Heart Procession, Dalek, Subtitle, Mice parade, Hrsta , Yelle, Experience…

Nocturnal Projections - Another Year - 1982
Nocturnal Projections were a post-punk band from Stratford, near New Plymouth, New Zealand that began recording in 1981 and split up in 1983. Often compared to British bands, especially Joy Division, with whom they shared a moody, bass-driven sound, although the Projections’ guitar was less metallic and more ebullient than Joy Division’s. They also never underwent the exacting production of many such British bands.

Powder! Go Away are an instrumental post-rock band from Russia. I know more about Laika, than about them. They seems to be a bunch of kids, but “Laika Still Wants Go Home” it’s a beautiful and mature instrumental rock album, this possible homage to Laika are quite impressive. Literally. Powder! Go Away successfully recreated a kind of spacial atmosphere, their airy compositions are filled with beautiful layers, suggestive noises, some heavier rock explosions ensure a nice, flowing dynamic to the album. Absolutely awesome.

Laika was a space dog. Actually the first animal to orbit the Earth, as well as the first animal to die in orbit.
After the success of Sputnik 1, Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet leader, wanted a spacecraft launched on November 7, 1957, the 40th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution. To meet the November deadline, a new craft would have to be built. Khrushchev specifically wanted his engineers to deliver a “space spectacular,” a mission that would repeat the triumph of Sputnik I, stunning the world with Soviet prowess. The planners settled on an orbital flight with a dog. Three dogs were trained for the Sputnik 2 flight: Albina, Mushka, and Laika.
Laika was found as a stray wandering the streets of Moscow. Soviet scientists chose to use Moscow strays since they assumed that such animals had already learned to endure conditions of extreme cold and hunger. Soviet space-life scientist Oleg Gazenko selected and trained Laika.
Before the launch, one of the scientists took Laika home to play with his children. In a book chronicling the story of Soviet space medicine, Dr. Vladimir Yazdovsky wrote, “I wanted to do something nice for her: She had so little time left to live.”
The launch took place on November 3, 1957. The Russian scientists had planned to euthanize Laika with a poisoned serving of food. Many rumors circulated about the exact manner of her passing. In 1999, several Russian sources reported that Laika had died when the cabin overheated on the fourth day.
Sputnik 2 was not designed to be retrievable, and Laika had always been intended to die.

They have been signed to the Japanese indie rock record label AVOCADO Records since the release of their self-titled EP in January 2008.

Civil Civic - Rules (2011)
Civil Civic es un dúo, compuesto por Aaron Cupples (guitarra, ruido) y Ben Green (bajo, ruido) quienes eran amigos en Australia. Mientras Cupples fijó su residencia en Londres, Green terminó por asentarse en Barcelona. Así que se trata de una banda anglo-barcelonesa que reúne las percusiones programadas con guitarras noise. Se los ha etiquetado bajo la tendencia Math Rock (un estilo surgido a finales de los 80 caracterizado por la complejidad de sus ritmos y lo raro de sus estructuras. Maneja espacios y tiempos extremos, y en una misma canción se puede escuchar una melodía armoniosa y un riff distorsionado).
